Rally forced down to 8 stages |
Carlow Car Club would like to announce that due to circumstances beyond our control we have had to reduce our Stages Rally to 8 stages instead of 9 as originally planned. Every effort was made to avoid this loss but unfortunately it was unavoidable. Due to this stage 1 will be run twice and stages 2 and 3 three times.
Entries are still coming in strong with some top names appearing on our entry list. Last years MkII Challenge winner Simon Mauger will be returning this year and Manus Kelly is also set to tackle the stages. Local man Terence O’Shaughnessy is said to be making every effort to have his Toyota Corolla ready in time for the event while David and George Condell are set to be strong contenders in the MkII Challenge.
Entries are available on the EVO online system or by post to the Entries Secretary, Ms Charlotte Egan, Carlow Car Club, Gilbertstown, Rathoe, Co Carlow, entry forms can be downloaded from the website www.mkiichallenge.com
If you need any further information or have any queries on the rally you can Phone +353 (0)59 8632761 or Fax +353 (0)59 8632269.

This years rally is fast approaching! |
With the 2010 Carlow Rally fast approaching, the hard work of the organisers gains speed. As ever the prestigious MkII Escort Challenge is at the very heart of the rally. A word of thanks must go to the Lord Bagenal Hotel, where we will be launching the rally on Thursday April 1st and all are welcome to attend. The Lord Bagenal Hotel will once again host this years event on Sunday 9th May.
This years rally will contain 9 stages with 160 stage kilometres and 120 road kilometers. We are determined that this years rally will be better than ever and with the help of the organisers and competitors we will certainly give fans and spectators a day to remember. Last year’s winner of the MkII Escort Challenge, Simon Maugher (Pictured below) will be back to defend his title.
To help us with this task we are calling on all competitors and particularly MkII Escort drivers to compete in our rally. The rally has gained more and more overseas competitors over the last number of years and we would love this to continue. We are aware it is not always easy to get deals with ferry crossings and accommodation etc, so this year Kevin Pead has volunteered to help any competitor in any way possible. So far he has arranged special deals on ferry crossings, hotel accommodation, HANS and helmet hire, secure parking and lots more. For further information please feel free to contact him on +353 (0)85 767 1198 or by email kevinuk6@hotmail.com
For marshal information please contact Chris Nugent on +353 (0)87 280 0767 or email chrisnugent@carlowcarclub.ie
(L-R) Alan & Sam Smyth (3rd overall), Simon Maugher (MkII Escort Challenge Winner), Donal Meany (Clerk of the Course), Ken Blanche (Simon's Maugher's Navigator), Seamus O'Connell & Brian Duggan (2nd Overall).

Rally Report |
The Lord Bagenal Hotel Stages Rally and MkII Challenge attracted spectators from all over to the hedgerows and fields of Old Leighlin and Nurney on Sunday last.
Despite entries being down on previous years it was a highly entertaining rally with some top class drivers. Early morning saw crews head for stages 1 and 2 in the Old Leighlin region these stages were a test on both driver and navigator but provided some great entertainment for the spectators. Michael Barrable and his navigator Dermot O’Gorman were fastest through these two stages with local crew Terence O’Shaughnessy and Eugene McGrath in close second. After a service crews headed back to Old Leighlin to complete these stages again Barrable increased his lead but this did not deter O’Shaughnessy and he and McGrath were virtually on the door handles and put in some fantastic stages times in their class 14 Toyota Corolla GT.
In the afternoon crews headed to the Nurney area for the final four stages theses were very fast stages and spectators were treated to plenty of speed and sideways action. Once again Barrable advanced his lead over the Carlow crew which eventually seen him emerge as the overall winner of the 2009 Stages Rally with a time of 1.05.31mins and O’Shaughnessy 2nd overall with a time of 1.07.51mins, this was an incredible drive from this pair and at the prize giving later in the evening Michael Barrable congratulated the lads on their achievement in the spec of car in which they were competing. The MkII Challenge which is now an integral part of the Carlow Stages Rally as always attracted a large entry from at home and abroad. A strong battle continued throughout the day between Simon Mauger for the UK and Seamus O’Connell from Derry. Mauger with local man Ken Blanche on the notes emerged as the eventual overall winner of the 2009 MkII challenge with a time of 1.07.14mins and O’Connell in 2nd while local crew Sam and Alan Smyth took 3rd overall after a faultless drive all day.
Other club members who did well in the challenge were Seamus Doyle and Kevin Barry finishing 5th overall and 2nd in class 21, Trevor Culbert and Russell Dagge 7th overall and 4th in class these pair also scooped the best club members award. Cyril Kerr and Noel Coogan were 2nd in class 19 with Michael and David Dowling picking up 3rd in class 20 despite reports of gearbox problems during the day. Tony and Aidan Canny were 3rd in class 18 while Brian Doyle and Syl Shaughnessy had a good run and finished 7th in class 18.
The Cullen brothers from Greenlane were on the pace throughout the day and brought their darrian T90 home 14th overall and 1st in class 10, while Adrian McGrath and Catherine Lyons were 28th overall and 4th in class 13 after suffering problems early in the day with a misfire. Andrew McCabe secured 1st in class 12, Emmet Watchorn 2nd class 2 with Pat and Denise Rowan in 4th. Albert Dalton and Philip Duggan finished 5th in class 9 despite their visit to the bushes which seen them lose some time and perhaps some pride, Albert’s wife Anita also made her debut on the rallying scene as she took up the navigator position with club member John O’ Donnell.
The club would like to thank everyone who help out with the organising and running of the rally, also the sponsors OK Lift Trucks and the Lord Bagenal Hotel and a special word of thanks to the residents on the stages. The clubs next event will be the sprints on the June bank holiday.
